Our Hymnbook

Wonderful, Merciful Saviour

Eric Wyse and Dawn Rogers

Verse 1

Wonderful, merciful Saviour

Precious Redeemer and Friend

Would have thought that a Lamb could

Rescue the souls of men,

Oh You rescue the souls of men.

Chorus

You are the One that we praise

You are the One we adore

You give the healing and grace our

Hearts always hunger for,

Oh pour hearts always hunger for.

Verse 2

Counselor, Comforter, Keeper

Spirit we long to embrace,

You offered hope when our hearts had

Hopelessly lost the way,

Oh we’d hopelessly lost the way.

Chorus

You are the One that we praise

You are the One we adore

You give the healing and grace our

Hearts always hunger for,

Oh our hearts always hunger for.

Verse 3

Almighty, infinite Father

Faithfully loving Your own.

Here in our weakness You find us

Falling before Your throne,

Oh we’re falling before Your Throne.

Chorus

You are the One that we praise

You are the One we adore

You give the healing and grace our

Hearts always hunger for,

Oh our hearts always hunger for.

Behind the hymn

"Wonderful, Merciful Saviour" was written by Dawn Rodgers and Eric Wyse in 1989 and has become a beloved expression of intimate worship in churches across many traditions. Rodgers and Wyse crafted the song as a meditative reflection on the tender, compassionate character of Christ — each verse uses a string of descriptive titles ("Wonderful, Merciful Saviour," "Counselor, Comforter, Keeper") that draw from Isaiah's messianic prophecies and the New Testament's portrait of Jesus. The song's gentle, lilting melody creates an atmosphere of quiet reverence that distinguishes it from the more exuberant praise songs of the era. It was published by Word Music and quickly became a favorite in both evangelical and mainline churches, crossing the traditional-contemporary worship divide. The chorus — "You are the One that we praise, You are the One we adore" — expresses the simplest and most fundamental act of Christian worship: directing all praise and love to Christ alone. The song remains a timeless expression of devotion that has endured well beyond the worship trends of the late 1980s.
