Behind the Hymn
"We Hunger and Thirst" is an original composition by Cornerstone Reformed Baptist Church, written to express the congregation's deep longing for God's presence, His Word, and spiritual nourishment. The hymn draws on the biblical theme of spiritual hunger and thirst found throughout Scripture — from the Psalms ("As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God" — Psalm 42:1) to Jesus' words in the Beatitudes ("Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled" — Matthew 5:6). As a Cornerstone original, it reflects the particular spiritual journey and theological convictions of the congregation, giving voice to their corporate longing for deeper communion with God. The tradition of local churches writing their own hymns stretches back through every era of church history, from the early church fathers to the Reformers to the great revival movements. This hymn stands as Cornerstone's own expression of that age-old cry for more of God. It serves as both prayer and declaration — an honest acknowledgment of spiritual need and a confident expectation that God will satisfy those who seek Him.
