There is Power in the Blood

Lewis E. Jones

Verse 1

Would you be free from

The burden of sin?

There’s power in the blood,

Power in the blood;

Would you o’er evil

A victory win?

There’s wonderful

Power in the blood.

Chorus

There is power, power,

Wonder working power

In the blood of the Lamb;

There is power, power,

Wonder working power

In the precious

Blood of the Lamb.

Verse 2

Would you be free

From your passion and pride?

There’s power in the blood,

Power in the blood;

Come for a cleansing

o Calvary’s tide;

There’s wonderful

Power in the blood.

Verse 3

Would you be whiter,

Much whiter than snow?

There’s power in the blood,

Power in the blood;

Sin stains are lost

In its life-giving flow;

There’s wonderful

Power in the blood.

Verse 4

Would you do service

For Jesus your King?

There’s power in the blood,

Power in the blood;

Would you live daily

His praises to sing?

There’s wonderful

Power in the blood.

Behind the hymn

"There Is Power in the Blood" was written by Lewis Ellis Jones in 1899, a prominent figure in the Salvation Army and later a music leader for evangelistic campaigns. Jones was associated with the camp meeting and revival tradition that swept through America in the late nineteenth century, where energetic gospel songs played a central role in evangelistic outreach. The hymn's direct question-and-answer format — "Would you be free from the burden of sin? There's power in the blood" — reflects the straightforward, urgent evangelistic preaching of the era. The repeated emphasis on "the blood of the Lamb" draws from the rich biblical theology of blood atonement, from the Passover lamb in Exodus to the declaration in Revelation 12:11 that the saints "overcame him by the blood of the Lamb." The hymn's upbeat, march-like rhythm made it a favorite at revival meetings, camp meetings, and Salvation Army street services where the goal was to reach the unchurched with a clear, memorable gospel message. Despite its simplicity, the hymn carries the weight of the central Christian truth: that the sacrificial death of Christ is the only power sufficient to cleanse, redeem, and transform sinners.
