Behind the Hymn
"Reformation Song" was written by Tim Chester and Bob Kauflin to celebrate and teach the core doctrines of the Protestant Reformation. Chester is a British pastor, theologian, and author associated with the Acts 29 network, while Kauflin serves as Director of Worship for Sovereign Grace Churches. Together they crafted a hymn that sets the five "solas" of the Reformation — Scripture alone, faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone, and to God's glory alone — into a singable, memorable form. The hymn was written to serve as both worship and catechesis, helping congregations internalize the theological convictions that Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other Reformers risked their lives to proclaim in the sixteenth century. Each verse takes one of the solas and unpacks its meaning in poetic, accessible language. The song has become particularly popular on Reformation Sunday (the last Sunday in October) and in churches that trace their theological heritage to the Reformed tradition.
