Behind the hymn

"Psalm 51 (Create in Me a Clean Heart)" is a direct Scripture song drawn from Psalm 51:10-12 in the King James Version, the great penitential psalm of David. David wrote Psalm 51 after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah — it is perhaps the most raw and honest confession of sin in all of Scripture. The cry "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me" acknowledges that only God can cleanse a sinful heart — no amount of human effort or religious ritual is sufficient. Setting Scripture directly to music for congregational singing has a long history in the church, from the earliest chanted psalms in the synagogue to the metrical psalters of the Reformation to modern Scripture songs. This adaptation preserves the exact words of the King James translation, allowing the congregation to sing God's own Word back to Him as a prayer of repentance and renewal. The passage has been especially meaningful to Christians who understand that sanctification, like justification, is ultimately God's work in us — we can only ask Him to create what we cannot produce ourselves.
