Behind the Hymn
"O Come, All You Unfaithful" was written by Bob Kauflin and Lisa Clow as a counterpart to the traditional Christmas hymn "O Come, All Ye Faithful." While the original "Adeste Fideles" invites the faithful to come and adore Christ, Kauflin and Clow's hymn extends the invitation to the unfaithful — the doubting, the wandering, the broken, and the ashamed. The song reflects the gospel truth that Jesus came not for the righteous but for sinners (Mark 2:17), and that the Christmas invitation extends especially to those who feel disqualified from God's presence. Kauflin, the Director of Worship for Sovereign Grace Churches, has long emphasized that worship songs should reflect the full range of human experience before God, including failure and doubt, not just triumph and certainty.
