Behind the Hymn
"I Will Glory in My Redeemer" was written by Steve and Vikki Cook, husband and wife songwriters who have been influential in the Sovereign Grace worship community for decades. Steve Cook is a worship leader and songwriter whose compositions are known for their rich doctrinal content and their focus on the person and work of Christ. This hymn is structured as a three-verse declaration, with each verse exploring a different aspect of Christ's redemptive work — His sacrifice that purchased the believer's freedom, His power that raised the dead to life, and His return that will complete the believer's salvation. The repeated declaration "I will glory in my Redeemer" echoes the apostle Paul's words in Galatians 6:14: "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." The Cooks' songwriting reflects the Reformed emphasis on making much of Christ rather than the worshipper's experience, ensuring that the glory always returns to the Redeemer.
