Behind the Hymn
"Behold Our God" was written in 2011 by the Baird brothers — Jonathan, Meghan, and Ryan — along with Stephen Altrogge. The song was born out of a desire to write a worship song that was entirely focused on the character and attributes of God rather than on the worshipper's feelings or experiences. The Bairds, who are part of the Sovereign Grace family of churches, crafted a hymn that draws from Isaiah 40 and other prophetic passages that exalt God's incomparable greatness, power, and wisdom. The rhetorical questions — "Who has held the oceans in His hands? Who has numbered every grain of sand?" — echo God's own challenge to Job and Isaiah's soaring poetry about the Creator. The song builds to the powerful chorus, "Behold our God, seated on His throne; come, let us adore Him," which is designed for the full congregation to sing with conviction. It quickly became a favorite at Sovereign Grace and Reformed conferences and has spread widely as a song of pure adoration.
