The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Command the people of Israel and say to them, My offering, for my food offerings, my pleasing aroma, you shall be careful to offer to me at its appointed time. And you shall say to them, This is the food offering that you shall offer to the Lord.
Too many lambs a year old without blemish, day by day as a regular offering. the one lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight. Also a tenth of an ephah, or fine flour, for a grain offering mixed with a quarter of a hin of beaten oil. Also one male goat for a sin offering, besides the regular burnt offering and its grain offering and its drink offering." Verse 39, "...
this you shall offer to the Lord at your appointed feasts, in addition to your vow offerings and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, and for your grain offerings, and for your drink offerings, and for your peace offerings. So Moses told the people of Israel everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses." This is the reading of your precious Word, O Lord. Lord Jesus, help us, please, not only to speak, but to receive the words that come from your heart. Guide us, Lord, as we speak, and guide my brothers and sisters as they receive the word.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Beloved of Christ, last time when I had the opportunity to address you from chapter 27, I wanted to speak to you about the nature of the promise of God. the promise of God given to the people of Israel under the old covenant. And I said to you under the authority of Scripture that that promise of God for the people of Israel under the old covenant is a shadow of the promise that God gives to His new covenant people, namely the church in the new covenant established by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The people under the old covenant were given the promise that they were going to be given a promised land that they were going to receive from which milk and honey will flow. In the same sense, the church under the new covenant has been given the promise of God that we will inherit, that we will receive a new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. as I wanted to share with you that burden that we will understand better the promise of God given to His people under the old covenant as a shadow of the new covenant. I gave you two characteristics of that promise of God given to the people. I said, first of all, that the first characteristic of that promise of God to His people was that that promise was given as an inheritance.
that God decided that that land was going to be given to the people as an inheritance, that God was the owner of that land and that His people, Israel, were going to inherit that promised land. Under the new covenant we have, that the promise that we have of the new heavens and the new earth is greater and is more majestic, not because it's a portion of land, But it's a new heavens and new earth in which Jesus Christ dwells. And He is the guarantee of the promise that is kept and reserved in heaven for us. That's why that promise is incorruptible and defiled and does not fade away and is kept for us in heaven, who are being kept by the power of God through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed. This promise of God is given to His people as an inheritance.
The second thing that I mentioned to you a couple of weeks ago, beloved of Christ, attention to your hearts and your minds, is that this promise of an inheritance was given through a Mediator, through a Mediator. Under the old covenant, that Mediator was Moses and when he died, then he gave that role to Joshua. Joshua is going to be the person that is going to bring them into the Promised Land. And one of the things that I wanted to show a couple of weeks ago is that the role of the Mediator is necessary, but under the Old Covenant, the Mediator himself was not indispensable. How do we know that?
Because Moses died and he passed the role on to Joshua. But glory be to Jesus Christ whose life is eternal and whose life cannot be taken because He is the better and the greatest mediator of the promise given to us under the cross and in His blood that guarantees that we're going to enter into that inheritance and that our glorious mediator is not only a servant of the promise, But He is the one, the substance of the promise itself. And He is the one that we desire to see. No new heavens, no new earth. Praise be to God that we're going to be brought into a new creation.
But the beauty of the final state of humanity, it is not the glorious appreciation of the things that have been restored, but it's the presence of God in the person of Jesus Christ with His people. He is the substance of the inheritance and he's the glorious mediator, the high priest, the high apostle of the church. Having said those two things, now I want to bring another characteristic of the promise of God. I have said to you that this promise is given by inheritance through a mediator in the old covenant and in the new covenant. There is another element for that promise of God, and that is found here in these two chapters.
That element of the promise of God is called obedience. Obedience is the third element of the promise of God. For the people of God under the old covenant, obedience was a requirement. For them to inherit the land through the mediator, obedience was a requirement. And this obedience was not only a requirement for them to receive the land, but it was also a requirement for them to preserve the land.
They will take possession of the land by and through obedience, and they will keep the land through obedience. And obedience in the old covenant, beloved of Christ, it is best manifested and expressed and taught unto the saints by sacrifices and offerings. Sacrifices and offerings, beloved of Christ, are manifestations of the obedience of the old covenant people to the God that they say that they belong to. Promises or better, offerings and sacrifices represented the ongoing and continuous obedience of each one of the individuals of the people of Israel and the community as a whole. And obedience was required for them, not only to inherit and enter into the land, but also to preserve and keep possession of the land.
In a sense, all the obedience of the people of Israel under the Old Covenant was manifested in their religious practices or ceremonial practices through offerings and sacrifices. Come with me, please, to Deuteronomy chapter 18. And in Deuteronomy chapter 18, I will show you the importance of offerings and sacrifices in the giving and in the inheritance of the land. If you quickly go there, Deuteronomy chapter 18, in verse 9, we can see this aspect that I'm trying to show you. It says, verse 9, when you come into the land that the Lord your God has given you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.
There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering. Anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a medium, or a necromancer, or one who inquires of the dead. For whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations to the Lord your God is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.
For these nations which you are about to dispossess, listen to the fortune tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the Lord your God has no allowed you to do this. Thanks. He says here, when you enter into the land that I'm giving you as an inheritance, you are not to follow the offerings and the sacrifices of the people that are going to be removed from the land. And as you progress through the Old Testament, you will see that as wicked kings and the times of backsliding of the people of Israel, their disobedience to the Lord is manifested in that they make unto themselves high places to offer sacrifices and offerings to other gods.
It was because the allegiance or the obedience of the old people of Israel to God was manifested in the continual keeping of offering and sacrifices. This is the indictment that the prophets will bring upon the people of Israel. If you go to Ezekiel chapter 20, quickly just go to Ezekiel chapter 20, and we can see there in the indictment of the prophets to the people of Israel, verse 27. Pay attention to the indictment of the prophet to the posterior Israel generation, speaking of offerings and sacrifices in verse 27 of this chapter 20. Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, That says the Lord God, in this also your fathers blaspheme me by dealing treacherously with me.
For when I had brought them into the land that I swore to give them, Then, wherever they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering. There they sent up their pleasing aromas, and there they poured out their drink offerings. I said to them, what is the high place to which you go? So its name is called Bama to this day, and go, and so on, and so on, continues. the indictment of the prophet to the people of Israel, because they had turned from the Lord to other gods, and the turning from the Lord to other gods had been manifested, in that the offerings that the Lord had prescribed for them were now being offered in different ways and according to their minds, following the passions of their hearts, to other gods and to other nations."
Beloved of Christ, brothers and sisters and friends, there is a very important teaching here that we can take from the Old Testament and apply to the heart of our souls and our being under the new covenant, under the person of Jesus Christ. And what I want to bring to you is just simply the concept of obedience in the flesh against obedience in the spirit. Obedience in the flesh, which is that which characterizes the people of Israel under the Old Covenant, with obedience in the Spirit, which is that we are supposed to do in the New Covenant by the power of the Spirit and through the power of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. And in order to do that, in order to show you the difference between obedience in the flesh and obedience in the Spirit, let me point you to three characteristics of the obedience of the people of Israel as is given to us here in chapter 28 and 29. So that we will understand not to follow the ways of the people of Israel, but rather to walk in the Spirit as we're called under the New Covenant.
Let me give you three characteristics of obedience in general. And then from there, we will understand what is obedience in the flesh and obedience in the spirit. The first thing that I want you to see is, or that I want us to understand, is the meaning of obedience. What is obedience? And what is obedience more particularly said here in this chapter 28 and 29 as is manifested through these sacrifices and offerings?
What is obedience in this case? If you pay attention to verse 2 in chapter 28, we are given a very important word that is going to help us to comprehend the concept or the meaning of obedience in general, and more particularly as is given to us in offerings and sacrifices. Verse 2, it says, "...commend the people of Israel and say to them, for my food offerings, my place in Aroma, you shall be careful to offer to me at its appointed time." And then it continues with all the offerings for chapter 28 and 29.
But pay attention to what precedes the offerings and sacrifices. It says, "...commend the people of Israel." Obedience, beloved of Christ, is the response of the people of God to the commandment of the Lord. That is a manifestation of the existing relationship that we have with Him.
Obedience is the response of my heart in obedience to the commandment that the Lord God has given to us. And this is a manifestation of my relationship, your relationship, our relationship to the Lord. And that obedience is unto Him. Because the commandment comes from the mouth of the Lord. And this obedience, beloved of Christ, before glory, it is clearly seen under the Old Covenant and in the New Covenant, at least in two manifestations.
One of them is obedience unto worship of the Lord. That is that we obey the commandments of the Lord to worship Him. And then when you go to Leviticus and you analyze all the offerings and sacrifices, you will see that you find many of them that deal primarily with that. With worship and gratitude to the Lord. Because we obey Him to worship Him.
But before glory, we also obey Him to deal with sin. We obey Him to deal with our sin. Under the old covenant, they will offer burned sacrifices to deal with sin. Under the new covenant, we hear the commandment of the Lord that says, come to me and repent from your sins. Be in agreement with the light and repent and confess your sins.
And if you confess your sins, He's faithful and just to forgive you your sins. Obedience as a response of my heart to the Lord. It is for worship and gratitude to my Savior. But it's also to deal with my sin. Because the more that I obey His voice and the more that I worship Him, the more that I walk in His ways.
That is obedience. But now, the second thing that I want you to see just from these chapters, it is the timing of obedience. How often obedience is to be done and conducted. How often we are to obey. And in chapter 28 through chapter 29, we have that the manifestation of obedience of the people of Israel was daily.
Morning and night, on the Sabbath, every month, every feast, on the Day of Atonement, every seven years. You can see the repetition of the offerings every single day, every single Sabbath, every single month, every single aspect. Because obedience is meant to be done continually and ongoingly. Your life is meant to be a life of obedience. We do not obey when we have a situation that is placed before us and we decide what place to take.
Every second of your life, even as I'm speaking and as you're hearing, you are confronted with a path of righteousness or unrighteousness. You are confronted with a path of obedience unto the Lord or a path of disobedience unto the Lord. If your heart is unloving and if your mind is somewhere else, guess what? This is disobedience to love. If my heart is filled with self-seeking and just doing things unto myself and not before the Lord, I can't be speaking the words of angels.
and walking in unrighteousness. Because just as in the Old Testament, obedience was a manifestation of the relationship with the Father and with God, the Lord God of Israel, and it was meant to be done continually and ongoingly, so it is under the New Covenant because God has not changed. So we have that the meaning of obedience is a manifestation of my relationship with God that is meant to be done constantly and ongoingly. And this third thing that I want to show you here, beloved of Christ, it is the expectation of obedience, the expectation of obedience. And that expectation of obedience is just summarizing a statement that the Lord has made from the Old Testament.
It started in Genesis chapter eight or nine up to this point. And that is if you read there in verse two. my offering, my food for my food offerings, my pleasing aroma, you shall be careful to offer to me at this appointed time. And it's appointed time is continually and ongoingly. But the expectation of obedience is that it will be a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
That is what we read, repeating through chapter 28 and 29. The time of the offering, the type of the offering, how the offering was meant to be done. And that was meant to be a pleasing aroma to the Lord. Day, Sabbath, month, feast, day of atonement, and so on and so on. The offering, how the offering has to be given from the people or from the covenantal people or the individual.
And then this is meant to be a pleasing aroma to the Lord. And you know what the Bible says first about a pleasing aroma to the Lord? Come with me to Genesis chapter 9, and we can read it together so that we will have the weight of God's Word on us and not mine. Chapter 8, verse 20. Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Offerings, right? And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, The Lord said in his heart, I will never again curse the ground because of man. For the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease.
Of course, everything is according to the decree of God that he pleased God. That it was through the obedience of Noah and the offering that was a pleasing aroma to the Lord that he was pleased in his heart. A pleasing aroma. That is the meaning of what a pleasing aroma is. That he's satisfied with what he's receiving.
That he's moved, in a sense, in his heart. And the movement of the decision of what the outcome of this pleasing aroma to the Lord is that, I will never curse the land again. Now, you can put all your theology and all your decrees and everything in place and say, yes, but this corresponds to the character of God, and it's true. But this is also what the Bible says, that it was a pleasing aroma to the Lord. Because the obedience under the old covenant and under the new covenant, beloved of Christ, It is meant to be a manifestation of my genuine relationship to God that is to be done continually and perfectly and all the time, which is not pleasing to myself, but is pleasing to God.
In other words, it's obedience unto the Lord. And that is the backsliding attitude of the people of Israel, because every time that they were confronted with different situations, they will make unto themselves gods out of their own image, or out of their own thoughts, or the gods of their nations, and they will offer sacrifices unto them. And that's why the Lord sent prophets, and indictments, and judgments upon them. Because the Lord said, your heart is mine. I gave you freedom.
I liberated you. I am the one that has rescued you. Therefore, your obedience is meant to be unto me continually and ongoingly. And every time that you obey is meant to be a pleasing aroma to the Lord. That is the calling, not only for the saints of the Old Testament, but for the saints of the New Testament.
That that is the type of obedience that we ought to have. Now, you feel the burden. of that duty? Do you feel the burden of that duty? Do you feel, beloved of Christ, the burden of ongoing, continuous, almost perfect obedience unto the Lord, that everything that you do, say, and think in your heart is meant to be a pleasing aroma unto the Lord?
Do you feel the burden? And if you feel the burden, that is your problem. If you feel the burden, that is your problem. If you feel burden even with this public confession of the burden that that brings to your soul, that is your problem. That is the problem of our church.
That is the problem of Christianity. That is the problem of Israel. that the commandment of the Lord was carried not in the spirit, but was carried in the flesh. The fact that you feel burdened with obedience unto the Lord is because you're receiving that in your flesh. Because the scripture says in 1 John 5, verse 3, this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments and his commandments are not burdensome.
Does it give room for burden in obedience? Does it give room for being oppressed and they're following the commandments of the Lord? No, it does not give it. Because we receive the commandments in the flesh and that is your problem. That is my problem.
That is our problem. The problem of the church and the problem of Israel. Because we don't understand something. That someone has already come. You agree with this.
You know it in your heart and in your mind. Someone has already come. And this person that has already come has fulfilled entirely the requirements of the law. This person has already fulfilled all the requirements of the Father unto every human. And in Jesus Christ, human race has been exalted above angels.
We were made a little lower than the angels, but in Jesus Christ, humanity has been exalted to the right hand of the Father, seated on the throne, reigning right now. Because this Lamb of God, the one who is worthy that we sang, He fulfilled all of the requirements of the law so that we will live in newness of life. And then when the commandment of the Lord is uttered unto your soul, you will not receive it as a burden, but you will receive it as a joy. If you're not walking in that, beloved of Christ, then you're walking in the flesh. You see the seriousness of this?
The power of obedience is rooted in faith, but it's not rooted in a faith that is intellectual, but it's rooted in a faith that moves the person. How many times have you heard preachers telling you wrongly, and I think that even I have said it to you, of which I ask forgiveness, how many times have you heard Oh, I don't feel that I want to read a scripture. I don't feel that I don't want to pray. And then the men of God, you do it. Do it.
Just simply do it in obedience. Simply do it. Simply do it. I don't feel like coming to church. Just simply do it.
Do it. If you do it, you do it in faith and you do it by obedience. This is heresy. Because, beloved of Christ, doing things with a faith that is not substantially moved by love, it is a faith that is substantial less, and it does not move you to do the things according to what is written in the New Testament. Come with me to Galatians chapter 5, and you will understand what I mean.
Galatians chapter 5, verse 6. For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith. working through love, where there is room for a faith that does not fail, for a faith that only goes through the motions, for a faith that only does and does and does and does the things that are supposed to do just to tick a box and then just to appease fleshly carnal conscience. How are you going to derive power and satisfaction from forcing yourself into reading a scripture and praying in the flesh? You will do it for two, three days, four days, and you will return to the state of being dried and cold.
Because when you don't feel reading a scripture, or we don't feel like doing the things of the Lord, there's a deeper problem with your heart. It's not a problem of doing or not doing. There is a problem of love to the Lord. Your heart has been taken captive by the affections of this world. Your heart has been taken by the affections of self.
So now your heart is not filled with love to the Father. It is not filled with love to Jesus Christ. How are we going to move ourselves into doing things absolutely lacking love and having reality and substantial presence of the Spirit in us? This is plain religion. And with plain religion, you get powerless Christians who will be falling into secret sins, having powerless churches, and having the world having domineering power over the church.
because we do not work in the power of the Holy Spirit, beloved of Christ. Under this new glorious covenant, Jesus Christ has given us his life. And the promise is that that life is abundant. And the promise is that every time that we come to him, he's going to answer and he's going to receive us by faith. And the faith that we do is just not simply doing it blindly, but the faith of the New Testament is a faith that moves a person into greater manifestations of glory and of life.
That every time that we obey, we don't do it for self, but we do it because of Christ. And that gives us greater reality of His presence. And this brings us to greater manifestations of sanctification. So if you are not moved by this type of faith, then come to the Lord and confess. Because He is always faithful and just to forgive your sins.
And then to empower you by His blood. To move you on to obedience that is not religious obedience, but it's obedience that is empowered by love. Many of you might be here just simply not hearing the words that I'm just saying. Or many of you might just be here just because this is the place that you have to be. Many of you might not even want to be here, and that is not good.
That is wrong. Many of you might just be here because your parents brought you here, and you're sitting there waiting that this whole thing may finish so that you will carry on with the things afterwards. Many of you were convincing to come in here just before the service, and that is not right. That is wrong with your soul. So if that is wrong with your souls, if that is sin, then you ought to come to Christ.
He is faithful and just to forgive you. And just as He saved you initially, He's going to restore you. And He's going to move you from a backslidden state into power. So that you will live your life unto the glory of the Father and unto the service of the saints. Not with religion.
Flee from religion. Flee from morality. And listen to my voice. Because if the things that I'm saying are true, then your conscience is not bound to the words of this man. But your conscience is bound to the heart of God.
And you're going to have to give an account to Him. So move yourself from there. Christ is almighty and all-glorious. And He's telling you, come, and come, and come. You don't have to push.
You don't have to move. You don't simply have to come to Him by faith. And He promised you that He's going to restore you, empower you, and give you great life in Him. Not because it's yours, but because it's His. And then you're going to join dying to self and living in Christ, because now your obedience is not obedience in the flesh as the Israelites, but it's obedience in the spirit of God, as the obedience of the apostles, as the obedience of the early church, and as the obedience of Jesus Christ, who said in the joy before him, or seeing the joy that was before him, endured until the end, so that we will follow after his steps.
And our Lord Jesus Christ has promised us that he is going to take us until the end.
