com. That's cornerstonerbc.com. Genesis chapter 5, we are going to continue with our corporate reading of scripture. We have been doing so from Genesis 1 and The plan is that the Lord gives grace and extends our days that we're going to go through the Bible.

That's going to take us 26 years. So may the Lord give us grace and love to be together in the faith, in the grace, glorifying Christ through the Spirit and going through the Bible together. So we're going to be reading five this morning. I'm reading from the English standard version of the Bible. Let's pay attention to the scripture.

This is the words of God. This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created men, he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female, he created them, and he blessed them and made them men when they were created. When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness after his image and named him Seth.

The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Adam that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died. When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh. Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years, and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, And he died.

When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years, and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years. And he died. When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel.

Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. That's all the days of Kenan were 910 years and he died. When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. Mahalalith lived after his father Jared 830 years and had all their sons and daughters. Thus, all the days of Mahalalith were 895 years and he died.

When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch. Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had all their sons and daughters. Thus, all the days of Jared were 962 years and he died. When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and he was not for God to keep. When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Methuselah were 969 years and he died.

When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah. Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands. live after his father Noah, 585 years, and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died. After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Amen. This is the word of God, beloved. reach a point in this progress, in this development of the story of creation that is called the end of the pre-Diluvian history. This is the history before the floods. And here in chapter 5, we have something very important.

We have a genealogy. A genealogy that comes from Adam to Noah. 10 different generations. The author of Genesis says that this is the book of the generations of Adam. And here we can see 10 different generations that go from Adam to Noah through his son, Seth.

This generation that is given here, you can compare with the generation that was given from Cain in chapter 4, as we studied last week. Or if you can see that there are 10 different generations, there also will be 10 generations from Noah. to Abraham. So it's a very neat, a very structured framework that the author of Genesis has given us here, from Adam to Noah. If there is a main topic, if there is a substance here in this chapter 5, that I can give it to you in one simple word, the doctrine or the teaching of this chapter will be death.

Death is the main topic that you can see throughout this genealogy. You can see that people are living long lives, and it doesn't matter how long they live, they all die. Adam lived 130 years, and then his father Seth, and then he lived 800 years, he lived a total of 930 years, and then the Bible says that he died. This is the reality for every person that comes after Adam, from Adam to Noah, and afterwards, the death. It is a reality.

Now we see here in chapter five then the fulfillment of that which the Lord has given or has said in the garden. The day that you eat of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall surely die. And actually that happened. He disobeyed. Adam disobeyed and he actually died spiritually.

And then this is the fulfillment of this physical or material death. He died. Then in Genesis 3 it says that you have been taken out of the dust, and you are dust, and you will return to the dust. This is the curse of dust unto dust, and this is the fulfillment of that. Death, it is the main topic that we find here in Romans, or in Genesis chapter 5.

And in Romans 5, in verse 12, we see that the Apostle Paul has given us, or has taught us specifically about what happened here. Because through the disobedience of Adam, sin entered the world. And through that sin, death is spread to all people, because all people sin. Here, in chapter 5 of the book of Genesis, we can see the fulfillment of that which the Lord promised in the garden and has also said in Genesis 3, and then what the Apostle Paul explains to us in Romans chapter 5. Death after death, the unrighteousness because of the disobedience of men that had entered the world now was spreading to all people, and independently of how long they lived, they would eventually die.

There are two things that I want you to notice from the concept or from that framework of death. The first one, it is found in verse one, and that is the image of God. Man had been created after the own image and likeness of God in the garden, but now Seth, who is the one that is of Adam, he is made, he is given life from the image and likeness of Adam. This image of God that was initially given to Adam has now been corrupted. It is not the same image.

As we mentioned this the first time that we came together, speaking of Genesis 1, of the image of God in men, the Apostle Paul then in Ephesians, and then in Colossians, he will give us a little bit more insight into what the image of God is. And then he gives us at least three components of that image of God. We said that the first time that we came together there is holiness, righteousness, true knowledge. If we try to see the image of God in something, the Apostle Paul will tell us that this image of God is holiness, righteousness, and true knowledge. That when we are in Jesus Christ, we are recreated or we are created after the image of the Creator, and that is in holiness, in righteousness, and is in true knowledge.

That is the image that Adam had in the garden, that it was lost and that it was corrupted upon the disobedience. So now man, because of death that is spread to all people, he is not holy anymore. He is not righteous anymore. And we do not have a true knowledge of God. Actually, the knowledge that we have of God, it is suppressed in unrighteousness.

Romans 1. This is the reality of the image of God that has been corrupted and now it is being spread to all people because the Apostle Paul says, all have sinned. This is the topic of Genesis chapter five. Death is spreading through the world. Death is spreading through people.

But here in this book, we can see the first shadows of the one who was going to come and destroy that death. Here in chapter 5 we can see the first types, or the first light, the Messiah that was gonna come, is given here. The first one is Enoch. Enoch, the seventh from Adam, is what Jude will say. Enoch, it says that he walked with God, and that he did not see dead, but rather that he was taken.

Not only Enoch, but also we see in the end of the chapter, we see Noah. Noah, the one that is going to bring rest to the land, the one that's going to bring rest to the earth. We see these two as types of Jesus Christ. A couple of things that I want you to notice of Enoch and Noah, because, beloved, these two are not only living providentially in this time of history, but they are also communicating precious information about Jesus Christ and the Messiah that is going to come. The first thing is that these two walked with God.

This is what chapter 5 says of Enoch, that Enoch walked with God. Same thing in chapter 6 verse 9 it said of Noah, that Noah was a righteous man and that he walked with God. This similar characteristic between Enoch and Noah. But not only that, then, the author of Hebrews in Hebrews 11 will give us more information about the life of Enoch and Noah. It is not only that they walked with God, but beyond that they also had faith.

faith that pleased God. This is spoken of Enoch in Hebrews 11. Enoch had a faith that pleased God, and because of that faith that pleased God, he was taken to heaven, or he was taken. Now there's something very important there that the author of Hebrews says in Hebrews 11, 5 and 6. that Enoch had this faith, and because of this faith that pleased God, he did not see death.

He did not face death. Everyone was dying around him. Everyone was passing away. It doesn't matter how long they were living, everyone was passing away. But because of the pleasing faith given through the Spirit to Enoch, he was taken up to heaven, and he did not see the death.

A similar thing we can see of Noah. That Noah was a man who walked with God, Genesis 6-9. But not only that, he was a man of faith, Hebrews 11-6. That because of that faith, he built the ark, and he obeyed God, and he followed instructions. And then because of that, he did not die the death of judgment of the flood.

He went through judgment, Noah. in the same way that Enoch went through or passed by the judgment of death, the physical death. One practical point that I really want you to have in mind there, just because when we read the text we don't have much information about the context of the things that were happening, but then in the Gospels we know that these times in which Enoch and Noah were living were times of plenty of sin. It was corrupted times. Everyone was in corruption, in unrighteousness, in practices that are not of God, ungodly practices, in the midst of pure corruption and unrighteousness.

Yet, they walked with God. And they did not walk with God one week, or two weeks, or this time of their lives, which is 30, 40, 50, or 60, 70 years. They walked with God hundreds of years. Very long periods of time. they walked with God because of the faith that was given to them.

Because of that faith, they surpassed that death that everyone was facing. Now, beloved, the topic of this genealogy that is first given is death. But this genealogy is an incomplete genealogy, because this is just a section of the genealogy that is gonna be given in the Gospels in Luke 3. The 10 generations that are given here is just a section of the genealogy of life, the genealogy of Jesus Christ. Because when Luke is speaking of the descendants of the Lord Jesus Christ, of the genealogy of the Lord Jesus Christ, he uses this section to point him to Adam.

It is Jesus Christ, the one who comes, who walks with God, has fullness of faith, and therefore, even though he faces death, he triumphs over death. Now, I said to you two aspects. It is not only death, but it's also the image of God. In the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15, he says that just as we have bore the image of Adam, we shall bear the image of the heavenly man, Jesus Christ. You see, there is a sense in which salvation can be summarized in this, that we are being made like Jesus Christ, and that we are recovering this is catalogical, or this end of times image of God, that it was lost in the garden.

Adam lost the image. This image of God is corrupted and is depraved now. We are not holy, we are not righteous, and we don't have a true knowledge of God. But now in Jesus Christ, because He lived and He has a perfect life, in union with Him, we receive of His life, and therefore we are recreated unto the image of the Son. Galatians.

Colossians. We will be made holy and blameless. righteous, and we will have a true knowledge of the triune God who has saved us. It is only in Jesus Christ that we can destroy death. This is what Apostle Paul does in Romans 5, when he says that those who come from Adam, that they have died because of their sins, but the grace is more abundant in Jesus Christ.

Because of the transgression of one man, the many have died, but because of the obedience and the grace of the one man, the many will be made alive. It is in Jesus Christ that we recover what we have, this image of God that is eternal and just is to come, and that we destroy the presence of death. Beloved, and the Bible is just precious, and the wisdom that is contained here cannot be described with words. Because here the author of Genesis has given us these very neat genealogies that are pointing towards a particular person, in this case, Noah, who is going to bring, or through whom is gonna come the judgment through water. And then after 10 generations, we'll see the person of Abraham, and something important is gonna happen with him.

that we might understand the development of these that we call the story of redemption is always pointing to the person of Jesus Christ and what he has done on behalf of his people, that by being in him, united to him and to his life, we are recipients of all the heavenly places. And the most precious one, it is to be partakers of his divine nature, to be united to him, and to have a type of communion, a type of light, a type of union with Him that no one else will have except the Church of Jesus Christ. And this is something that I really wanted to say days ago, but just imagine this. In the same way that Eve was taken out of the wreath of men, the Church is also in Jesus Christ and will be united to Jesus Christ in an eternal wedding. Just as husband and wife come together in one flesh and nothing can destroy this covenantal marriage, In the same way, Christ and the church will be together, united in eternity.

That is to come and everything because of one person. That person is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
