Our Beliefs
At Cornerstone Reformed Baptist Church, we affirm a clear set of biblical convictions that shape our life, worship, and witness as a church. These fundamental beliefs are rooted in the Word of God and summarise what we understand the Scriptures to teach on key matters of faith and practice.
Our Authority
THE SUPREMACY OF SCRIPTURE
We believe that the Bible, in the original autographs, consisting of 66 books, 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament is the Word of God. We recognise the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689, as the most accurate expression of the system of doctrine taught in the Bible. We do not hold this Confession of Faith to be above or equal to the Holy Scriptures. Rather we accept it as assistance in controversy, a confirmation of faith, and an instrument of edification and instruction.
2 Timothy 3:16–17; 2 Peter 1:20–21
THE SUFFICIENCY OF SCRIPTURE
We believe that the Bible alone, through the work of the Holy Spirit, is sufficient for salvation and life; nothing is to be added or subtracted from the Bible.
Psalm 19:7; Revelation 22:18–19; 2 Timothy 3:15
THE DOMAIN OF SCRIPTURE
We believe that the Bible is the supreme authority for the Christian and the local church.
Isaiah 8:20; Acts 17:11; Matthew 4:4
God
THE UNIQUENESS OF GOD
We believe that God is one. There is no other.
Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 45:5; 1 Corinthians 8:4
THE HOLY TRINITY
We believe in the Holy Trinity. In the unity of the one God, there are three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. These persons are eternally distinct, but equally God, each having the whole divine essence, yet the essence undivided.
Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; John 14:16–17
Creation and Fall
CREATION
We believe that God created the heavens and the earth and everything in them in six 24-hour days and rested on the seventh day.
Genesis 1:31–2:2; Exodus 20:11; Hebrews 4:4
THE FALL OF MAN
We believe that God created man upright, but sin and death entered the world through the disobedience of Adam.
Genesis 2:16–17; Genesis 3:6–7; Romans 5:12
ORIGINAL SIN
We believe that all humanity fell in Adam and through his sin, all humans are conceived and born sinners. Communion with God has been completely broken because of Adam’s sin.
Psalm 51:5; Romans 3:10–12; Romans 5:18–19
The Person and Work of Christ
CHRIST AS MEDIATOR
We believe that Christ our Lord is the only mediator between God and man. In His person are united two whole, perfect, and distinct natures: human and divine. He is true God and true man.
1 Timothy 2:5; John 1:1, 14; Colossians 2:9
CHRIST’S WORK OF SALVATION
We believe that Christ paid in full and satisfied the justice of God for His people upon the cross. His perfect life, substitutionary death, victorious resurrection, bodily ascension and coronation as King are the only means for salvation.
Romans 3:24–26; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4; Hebrews 10:12–14
Salvation in Christ Alone
THE FIVE “SOLA”s
We believe that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, as stated in the Scriptures alone, for the glory of God alone.
Ephesians 2:8–9; Romans 3:28; Galatians 2:16; 1 Corinthians 10:31
JUSTIFICATION
We believe that justification is the result of faith and not works. The redeemed sinner receives the forgiveness of sins and the righteousness of Christ as a complete gift from God, upon faith.
Romans 4:5; Romans 5:1; Philippians 3:9
ADOPTION
We believe that all persons who are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, also receive adoption into the household of God.
John 1:12–13; Romans 8:15–17; Galatians 4:4–5
The Indwelling Holy Spirit
SANCTIFICATION
We believe that all who have been justified, adopted, and have been united with the Lord Jesus Christ, also receive the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit upon salvation, who begins a work of sanctification, with the purpose of mortifying sin, producing holiness, and bringing conformity to the image of Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:9–11; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 5:16–25
SPIRITUAL GIFTS
We believe that the Holy Spirit equips all saints with spiritual gifts for the edification of the church.
1 Corinthians 12:4–7; Romans 12:6–8; Ephesians 4:11–12
The Gospel
THE SAME GOSPEL IN ALL AGES
We believe that all redeemed sinners, whether past, present or future are saved only through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 11:1–2, 39–40; Acts 4:12; John 14:6
THE PRESERVATION OF THE SAINTS
We believe that God preserves His people by His power through their faith until the end. All genuine believers are preserved by grace.
1 Peter 1:5; John 10:28–29; Philippians 1:6; Jude 1:24–25
NO OTHER GOSPEL
We believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only message that brings salvation.
Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1–4; Galatians 1:6–9
The Church
THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH
We believe that the universal church is comprised only of those who are saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:22–23; Colossians 1:18; Hebrews 12:22–23
THE LOCAL CHURCH
We believe that the membership of the local church is only for those who are saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 2:41–42, 47; 1 Corinthians 1:2; 1 Peter 2:5
CHURCH AUTHORITY
We believe that the local church has authority over its members derived only from the Lord and in conformity to the Scriptures.
Matthew 18:17–20; 2 Corinthians 2:6–8; Hebrews 13:17
CHURCH OFFICES
We believe that the local church consists of members, some of them will hold the offices of elders or deacons. All members are one and the same before the Lord. Only their roles vary.
Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:1–13; Galatians 3:28
EQUALITY OF ELDERS
We believe that all elders are equal in authority, and they are to devote themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word of God.
Acts 6:4; 1 Timothy 5:17; Titus 1:5–9
Baptism and the Lord's Supper
BAPTISM AS A SIGN
We believe that baptism does not save; it is a sign of genuine spiritual union with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 6:3–4; Acts 10:47–48; 1 Peter 3:21
SUBJECTS OF BAPTISM
We believe that baptism is only for those who profess faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 2:41; Acts 8:36–38; Matthew 28:19–20
THE MODE OF BAPTISM
We believe that baptism is to be administered only by full immersion.
Mark 1:9–10; John 3:23; Romans 6:4
FREQUENCY OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
We believe that the Lord’s supper is to be observed every Lord’s Day with reverence in the local church.
Acts 2:42; Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:26
THE NATURE OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
We believe that the Lord’s supper is not a sacrifice for the remission of sins. It is a memorial and proclamation of Christ’s sacrifice.
Luke 22:19–20; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26; Hebrews 10:10–14
The Second Coming of Christ
We believe that there is a future second visible coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to judge the world.
Acts 1:11; Matthew 25:31–32; Revelation 22:12
Marriage, Life and Family
SEXUAL MORALITY
We believe that God has commanded that no sexual activity be engaged in, outside of a marriage between a man and a woman.
Hebrews 13:4; 1 Corinthians 6:18–20; 1 Thessalonians 4:3–5
We believe that any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, trans-genderism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery, polygamy, and pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex.
Romans 1:26–27; Leviticus 18:22–23; 1 Corinthians 6:9–10; Galatians 5:19–21
MALE AND FEMALE
We believe that God in His wisdom has made each human being either male or female. And what he has made them at conception, is who they are, and is not subject to change. Therefore, God forbids any attempt to act in a way contrary to how one is created at conception. Any attempt to alter one’s behaviour or appearance, even with surgery, in order to emulate the opposite sex, is undermining God’s wisdom and His decree, and is sin in His eyes.
Genesis 1:27; Deuteronomy 22:5; Psalm 139:13–16
SANCTITY OF LIFE
We believe that man was made in the image of God. Human life is therefore sacred, from conception to natural death, and may not be taken unjustly. To intentionally end the life in the womb (abortion), or prematurely cause the death of the sick or dying (assisted suicide or euthanasia), is nothing short of murder and a heinous offence against God.
Genesis 1:26–27; Exodus 20:13; Proverbs 6:16–17; Psalm 139:13–16
BIBLICAL MARRIAGE
We believe that the only legitimate marriage is the one that is instituted by God, through the covenantal joining of one biologically born man with one biologically born woman.
Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4–6; Hebrews 13:4
FAMILY STRUCTURE
We believe that the family is to follow the authority, roles and structure given by God in the Scriptures.
Ephesians 5:22–33; Colossians 3:18–21; 1 Corinthians 11:3
